The Dempsey and Dembele to Spurs thread

Postby DCHeather » Thu May 10, 2012 6:47 am

I guess I might as well start this. I think all the suitors have been mentioned in the summer transfer thread. But here's the latest for Dembele:

Manchester United, City & Chelsea join race to sign £12m Dembele
The Belgian striker-turned-playmaker is regarded as a cut-price option by Premier League big guns ahead of summer scramble for his signature, with the Londoners willing to cash in

The attacking midfielder is being closely watched by all the Premier League big guns as the stampede for his signature increases.

And the Belgium international’s instrumental role in Fulham’s climb to ninth in the Premier League has now also alerted the three English clubs with the biggest wage bills.

Dembele is rated at £12-£15million by Fulham, where he has matured this season into one of the most accomplished playmakers in the Premier League.

However, Dembele will have only a year left on his contract come the end of the current season and the bidding for his services is likely to start at below the £10m mark.

Fulham are keen to agree new terms with the player, who joined from Dutch club AZ Alkmaar for £5m in the summer of 2010.

What's this "cut-price option" stuff. I say no less than $15 million. How many years left on his contract? One? If it's more than that, I say $20 million.

Yes, he's is in the exact same position as Demps...both have 1 year left. They both go for free at the end of their contracts if they don't renew.

If he and Demps are going this summer, we have to hope for a bidding war.

Always have to consider the source, but even with just a year left on his deal Moose will draw more than 12. If Sami Nasri can go for 22 million, then 14 to 17 sounds about right. However, as Heather says there needs to be 2 or more clubs bidding.

I would rather take the risk of losing Dembele and Dempsey for free at the end of their contracts, than give them away for less than £15m. That's what it is, we would be giving them away. Dembele is one of the best playmakers in Europe and Dempsey is one of the top goalscoring midfielders in Europe. Let them go find somebody else that does that for £10m.

I would love for them to stay for another year. And I keep hoping it happens. But if a the right club comes, I have feeling both players will want to go. And there's pretty much no use in keeping a player who wants to move on, as it would be better in the long term interest of the club to honor a player's wishes.

About Clint's injury ...

Postby HatterDon » Fri May 11, 2012 10:55 am

The rumor mill is rife with reports that Clint really does NOT have an injury and that he's being held out to insure his health for sale.

Here's a counter-discussion from a regular poster on Friends of Fulham:

Saw Clint this morning and he was just coming back from MP after a long session with the medical team, hamstring tight apparently so will not be at WHL on sunday asked him if he was leaving and said not as far as he is aware, talks over contract extension ongoing at the moment but is very happy at FFC

sounds promising.

Crossing fingers...I may move your post to the Dempsey Dembele watch thread, Hatter.

Sadly, "at the end of the day," it's just business for club and player. Loyalty is an idea from a bygone era...It's all about the money...

Aww, Tim. Why so cynical? Professional owners are always trying to do what's best for the player and damn the money. And players are constantly taking less money to continue to play for the club that made them. I can't think of a place more devoted to loyalty than professional sports.

As I affix my tinfoil hat firmly to my noggin, I contemplate the following:
1. A transfer has been agreed and the buying club wants Demps to take no part in Sunday's match;
2. A nondescript hip or hamstring injury can linger long enough to keep Demps out of the USMNT's matches; and,
3. The buying club receives a fresh Dempsey for CL matches in August/Sept.
